At the June 5th North Bay Watershed Association (NBWA) Meeting, Dave Demko of Winzler & Kelly presented this PowerPoint presentation illustrating the watershed-scale restoration efforts at Drakes Estero in the Point Reyes National Seashore in western Marin County. We’d like to share with you our positive experiences working on this project as an example of a successful habitat restoration.
The project primarily consisted of replacement of undersized culverts and removal of earthen dams that were impeding fish passage for steelhead trout. In addition, habitat was created for the California Red-legged frog. Construction extended over two seasons (August to December 2007 and August to November 2008) due to critical habitat constraints of several threatened and endangered species.
